The Debates- do they matter?

In general, I feel people don’t care about who is governing them as long as things are going well. Look at all elections and campaigns- they are won by politics of negation and contradiction, not by promises of good governance or better policies. Think “Yes, we can!” won Obama the election? Think again.

Obama won because he was the best person  available who was an antithesis of Bush, and McCain promised to be just another Bush.

This negation and contradiction takes center stage in the Presidential debates.

How will the 2012 elections be won (whoever wins)? For Obama, it is a question of hoping that the 2008 charm sees him through again. For the Republicans, it probably won’t be about the policies and governance that they can change, but rather about proving that Obama isn’t good enough – and then for one of them to be the best person around who isn’t Obama.

I think the average person, on election day, doesn’t really think about the big picture and the ultimate impact of the vote- they just vote for the person they like better! And this opinion is shaped by whatever they have seen of the candidate so far- and a big part of it is the debates.

The Presidential debates are like a prime time shows these days- Entertaining. Have Good acting. Are sometimes predictable. Sometimes even have trailers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfcOGWRfXdk  Watch this and tell me it doesn’t look like a movie trailer.

But can the Presidential debates ultimately win or lose an election? What do you think?

  1. The current system of Presidential Debates have numerous flaws.
    1. Only the Republican and Democrat is on stage. This is not a one-party state, so we should include all legitimate candidates that have sufficient ballot access to win the required Electoral Votes. (If this policy was done, then the debates in 2008 would have included Barack Obama (D), John McCain (R), Bob Barr (L), Chuck Baldwin (C), Cynthia Mckinney (G) and Ralph Nader (I))
    2. There is not sufficient time in the debates, and their number is too few. There should be at least seven debates. (a la Lincoln-Douglas debates)
    3. The debates should be aired on primetime tv by all major networks nationally and locally. Every American needs to know the candidates and what they actually stand for. They should also be aired via radio too. Also LIVE online (Youtube as well as Ustream)

  2. It has turned into a reality show. I feel like I am watching an episode of Survivor all playing out on a stage. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul seem to be the only adults on the stage.

  3. DID NOT LIKE OBAMA LAST GO ROUND … AND HAVEN’T CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT HIM THIS GO ROUND……. “WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM” …….. HE SPEAKS WITH FORK TONGUE … ONLY CARES ABOUT HIMSELF — HE’S KILLING THE AMERICAN DREAM .. SELLING US OUT TO OTHER COUNTRY’S (PLUS GIVING AWAY ALL OUR $$$ TO THEM —
THE CROOK IS AS CROOK DOSE

  4. I still cannot believe that any sane individual would vote Republican after they have openly stated that they would rather destroy this country just to destroy President Obama. And after they have blackmailed this country just to get their way. And why “any” minority would vote for a party that detests them, is beyond comprehension.
